Overreaction?

An eighth grader was suspended from his school for 55 days because he played a prank on one of his classmates. The class had just got done with a lecture about marijuana when the kid brought a bag of oregano and posed it as marijuana. The schools policy states that a student can get a 10 day suspension for "possessing illegal or counterfeit drugs and "misuse of chemical/material that causes or is claimed to cause a mind altering effect."A longer suspension can be imposed if officials determine a student's conduct "demonstrates a willful violation" of school policies. The mother states that it was a joke and the school needs to lighten up on the kids penalty. The incident happened February 1st and the school gave him a 10 day suspension and once his time was up the school called his family and said he had another 45 day suspension and is due to return March 29th.
